Singer Revitalizes Home Science Education Nationally

Singer Sri Lanka PLC, the country’s most trusted consumer durables retailer, has successfully commenced the second phase of “Singer Soopa Shasthra” programme jointly with the Ministry of Education to boost the standard of Home Science education across the country.

“Soopa Shasthra” programme was initiated in 2015, focusing on enhancing the Home Science subject in schools by emphasizing the importance of nutritious cooking as a vital part of a healthy lifestyle and a happy family.


It provides guidance on how to use modern kitchen appliances to create healthy meals in less time, thereby empowering the Sri Lankan families to cook right and eat right without loosing the traditional values and taste.


Under the 2nd phase of this unique initiative, much needed 150 schools were selected representing all provinces to receive Singer appliances to boost their Home Science classes, making the total of schools equipped to 300.


The package of equipment includes a Rice Cooker, Tabletop Gas Cooker, Pressure Cooker, Blender and an Electric Oven worth of approximately Rs. 35,000/= that makes a fully fledge Home Science Class.


As a result o f the first session of the programme, thousands of students managed to get the opportunity to pursue their Home Science studies using the equipment provided by Singer.

In addition, Home Science Teacher Training Workshops were organized across the island for more than one thousand & three hundred Home Science teachers, where they were taught about the latest kitchen appliances for time-saving, nutrition-maximized cooking methods, all in line with the national curriculum.


Students also received hands-on training on modern kitchen appliances at Singer showrooms island-wide.


According to the Ministry of Education, after the successful completion of this first phase of the project in 2015, there had been a notable increase in the number of students taking up Home Science as a subject for their G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination and a significant improvement in A/L examination results in the schools that participated in last year’s programme.


The Highest in marks were obtained by one of the students from the participated list of schools.

Expressing her views on the importance of the programme, Ms. Sunethra Wickramasingha, Assistant Director - Home Economics of Ministry of education, “Singer Soopa Shasthra” programme has immensely helped the Home Economic teachers to develop their skills practically via the wide range of modern equipment offered by Singer from world famous brands with the latest add-ons and also the programme has contributed in developing the subject to greater heights with noticeable results”.

Singer kitchen appliances and equipment are available through the company’s growing network of over 420 showrooms spread island-wide and an equally established after sales service network.
