Sri Lanka Junior Match Play Golf Championship for the Rukmini Kodagoda Trophy

The 3rd annual Sri Lanka Junior Match Play Championship teed off on a positive note with over 70 players competing in the qualifying round to make the cut for the match play rounds scheduled to be played over the three days.

The tournament is played in four age group categories : 15-17 years (Overall/Gold Division), 12-14 years (Silver Division), 10 -11years (Bronze Division), 9 years and under (Copper Division).


The winner of the overall championship would carry away the Rukmini Kodagoda trophy donated by the family in memory of one of Sri Lanka’s talented sports women, a national champion in both tennis and golf.


The qualifying medal round is also designated for junior nationalranking points for the year. In the open/gold division age group under 18 yrs, Vinod Weeraisnghe was the top qualifier with a gross score of 77.


However top contender, defending champion of the SL Junior match play championship Prashan Peiris failed to impress with a gross score of 90.


Closely followed by JanukaDilshan 80, T. Akash 82, P. Sugumar 94, S. Flamin 96, M Prashant 97 and Vihan De Alwis 102,making the cut for match play segment of the tournament.

In the silver division age group under 15 yrs the top spot was taken by Taniya Balasuriya with a gross score of 82.


The other seven to qualify for the match play stage: Dilshan Malinda 92, HimalRandima 92, Haroon Aslam 96, S. Duwarshan 98, S. Sanju 102, JithmaChamindri 102, Januda Jayasekera 103.


The age group category bronze division which has been upgraded to play 18 holes young NirekhTejwani’sscore of 93 gross ensured the top position.


The others in the group to show talent and qualify to play the knock out stage : Yanik Kumara 96, K Danushan 100, Sherin Mithara 105, Damin Kotagama 118, Vishagan 135, Sanjay 135, Lidurshan 151.

The most junior division the Copper age group 9 yrs and under was dominated by Shanal Binuksha carding the best gross score of 49 in the qualifying round.


The others selected to play; KvahnTejwani 52, Pranav Muralidaran 55, Shenuk Fernando 60.
