Last week, Nepal was rocked by its most violent upheaval in recent memory.

What began last Monday as a self-styled “Gen Z protest” against corruption, nepotism, and a clampdown on social media, spiralled into nationwide chaos after security forces opened fire on crowds.

By Tuesday, protesters had torched parliament, the Supreme Court, Singha Durbar, and other government offices, with homes of political leaders, police stations, schools, media outlets, and even Tribhuvan International Airport attacked.

The Ministry of Health and Population and the National Health Emergency Operation Centre were reduced to rubble, hospitals remain overwhelmed, and the death toll continues to climb.

Beneath the violence lies a deeper story of economic stagnation, corruption, unemployment, and a widening gulf between ordinary citizens and political elites, with the social media ban acting as a trigger for a broader anti-corruption movement that toppled the government.

For Sri Lanka, the unrest in Nepal serves as a sobering reminder of shared vulnerabilities—and the urgent need for resilience, inclusive growth, and regional collaboration.

Hallmark of Resilience & Growth

One of the most notable is CG Corp Global, Nepal’s first and only multi-billion-dollar conglomerate.

With a 140-year legacy across four generations, CG Corp Global has evolved into a multinational powerhouse with 261+ brands, 202 companies, and 20,000 employees across 32 countries.

Its story of survival and global expansion speaks volumes at a time when nations like Nepal—and Sri Lanka—are in search of stability.

Sri Lankan Footprint

Sri Lanka has long been a cornerstone in CG Corp Global’s regional strategy.

The Group’s first international hospitality investment was in Colombo in 2001 with the Taj Samudra, and today its footprint includes 14 leisure properties through partnerships with Jetwing Hotels and the Ceylon Hotels Corporation.

More recently, it has diversified further—acquiring Union Bank in 2023 and partnering with John Keells Holdings to bring BYD electric vehicles into Sri Lanka.

These moves demonstrate not only CG Corp Global’s resilience in times of regional instability, but also its long-term commitment to Sri Lanka as a growth hub.

Managing Director of CG Corp Global and Chairman of Union Bank Colombo Nirvana Chaudhary shares his feelings in the backdrop of the violence unleashed specifically on their homes, hotels, factories and showrooms and his team’s resilience of upholding an unbroken spirit.

“These last few days have been among the most painful in our company's history. What began as a movement of young people (Gen-Z) demanding accountability and change—a cause that carried good intent—was infiltrated and twisted by hooligans and external forces.

What should have been a peaceful call for a better Nepal was instead turned into violence, looting, and destruction.

We witnessed acts of shocking cruelty: our chairman Binod Chaudhary was personally targeted, our family homes attacked and burnt, our factories and offices were damaged and our showrooms looted.

Decades of work, sacrifice, and commitment—reduced to flames in a matter of hours. It was not just an attack on property but an attack on hope, on trust, and on the very idea of building something meaningful for our nation.

And yet, in these darkest hours, something extraordinary happened.

From within the flames and the chaos, the true spirit of CG emerged.

I have read reports and heard stories of our leaders, managers, and employees who risked their safety—working day and night, salvaging what they could, protecting our assets, and most importantly, keeping CG's promise to our customers alive.

Even as fire raged, our people did not give up.

They stood firm when everything around them was falling apart, showing the world what CG truly is: not just a company, but a family bound by resilience, loyalty, and courage.

Yes, we are hurt. Yes, we are shaken. But we are not broken. Our enemies may burn our buildings, but they cannot burn our dreams.

They cannot break the unity of our family. We must also remember who we are.

Chaudhary Group is Nepal's largest taxpayer, one of its largest employers, and a nation-builder.

At every crisis—whether earthquake, flood, or pandemic—we have stood at the frontline for our people.

That mission is not finished. That responsibility is not shaken.

That purpose is not lost. We will rebuild. We will recover.

And we will rise stronger than ever before.

Out of this tragedy will come renewal—new strength, new ideas, new systems, and an even deeper commitment to the people of Nepal.

History will not remember the flames that consumed us.

History will remember how we came out of them stronger, prouder, and more united than ever.

Together, we will not just survive—we will build a brighter future.”
