Since its inception in 1994, the programme has continued to support academic excellence by rewarding top performers from each district at the Grade 05 scholarship examination.
These students receive a monthly bursary from the time they enter their Advanced Level (A/L) classes until the completion of their university degrees.
Notably, these scholarships are given purely on merit, and the beneficiaries do not have to be related to an AIA customer to receive this.
This initiative, one of the longest-standing CSR projects in Sri Lanka, was launched to nurture Sri Lanka’s most promising students, recognising their role as the future of the country.
Staying true to AIA’s purpose of helping people live Healthier, Longer, Better Lives, this programme has touched countless lives, paving the way for a generation of professionals and leaders across diverse fields.
Over the past three decades, the programme has supported over 750 students, with many of these scholars having gone on to excel in fields such as medicine, law, engineering, academia, and public service, making meaningful contributions to the nation through the enduring impact of corporate responsibility driven by purpose.
Sri Lanka’s literacy rate surpasses expectations for a developing country, ranking highest in South Asia and among the top in Asia.
While secondary school enrolment reaches an impressive 99% up to grade 11, tertiary education enrolment falls sharply to 21%, significantly below the global average.
This disparity highlights a critical gap.
Additionally, prior to the 2022 economic crisis, a 2019 expenditure survey by the Department of Census and Statistics revealed that Sri Lankan families spent an average of Rs. 2,401 per month on education, representing 5.9% of their total monthly expenditure.
A significant portion of this spending was allocated to private tuition (48%), stationery (14%), and higher education activities (9%).
The 2022 economic crisis severely impacted these spending patterns and access to education.
Recognising education as a powerful enabler towards leading a Healthier, Longer, Better Life and empowering people to improve their circumstances and fulfil their dreams, AIA remains committed to building a brighter future for Sri Lanka.
