IASL and IRCSL Join Forces for Insurance for All A Secure Future Roadshow in the Northern Province

The Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL), in collaboration with the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), the Sri Lanka Insurance Brokers Association (SLIBA) and the Sri Lanka Insurance Institute (SLII), successfully concluded a series of insurance awareness programs in the Northern Province under the theme “Insurance for All: A Secure Future.”

The events, held in Jaffna on 22 October 2025 and in Kilinochchi on 23 October 2025, were part of a broader initiative to enhance financial literacy, expand insurance coverage, and strengthen public confidence in the country’s insurance industry.

The programs aimed to raise awareness about the importance of insurance as a means of financial protection and resilience, encouraging greater participation among individuals, small and medium enterprises, and public sector employees.

The Jaffna program commenced with an insurance awareness roadshow that drew enthusiastic participation from representatives of all licensed life and general insurance companies.

The roadshow served as an important platform to educate the public on the benefits of life, health, motor and property insurance, while also identifying potential customers for future coverage and fostering a stronger connection between insurers and the community.

Subsequent to the roadshow, awareness workshops were conducted at the Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre Auditorium.

The morning session, attended by government officers, bankers, SMEs, and the public, covered life, motor, and non-motor insurance, together with government schemes such as Agrahara, Suraksha, and the Optional Compensation Scheme (OCS) for third-party motor accident victims.

The afternoon session was dedicated to school and university students and aimed to provide career guidance and insight into the various opportunities available within the insurance sector.

Each participating company hosted a career guidance desk, allowing students to engage directly with industry professionals, seek advice, and submit their CVs.

The Kilinochchi program followed a similar model, beginning with an awareness roadshow near the Police Station and followed by an interactive workshop at RS Green Barathi Resort Hall.

Representatives from participating insurance companies engaged with members of the public through displays, discussions, and educational activities.

Approximately 500 participants attended the Kilinochchi event, gaining a better understanding of how insurance contributes to personal security, economic resilience, and long-term stability.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of IRCSL, Dr. Ajith Raveendra De Mel, emphasised that insurance is a key financial tool for managing risk and ensuring both individual and societal stability.

He stated, “Insurance plays a crucial role in ensuring financial security and stability for individuals and families.

Through these awareness programs, we aim to make insurance accessible and understandable for every Sri Lankan, ensuring that no one is left vulnerable to financial shocks.”

Also speaking at the event, President of IASL, Lasitha Wimalaratne, highlighted the importance of collaboration and the shared responsibility of the industry in promoting financial inclusion.

He said, “This joint effort between IASL and IRCSL reflects our shared commitment to building a financially literate and well-protected society.

By working together, we can create greater awareness and ensure that every Sri Lankan has access to affordable and reliable insurance solutions.”

The awareness programs also drew attention to several key initiatives underway to strengthen the country’s insurance framework, including the digitalisation of motor insurance through the introduction of e-cards, the development of an Insurance Repository in partnership with the Credit Information Bureau (CRIB), the introduction of simplified and affordable high-benefit insurance products and the reduction of the premium payment warranty period to 30 days from 1 January 2026.

The collaboration between IASL and IRCSL marks an important milestone in the industry’s collective effort to expand insurance literacy, promote financial inclusion and create a culture of protection and preparedness across Sri Lanka.
