More than 60 cyclists from NKAR Travels and Tours (Pvt) Ltd. took to the streets of Colombo on 29 June, for a 20-kilometre charity cycling event to mark the company’s 45th anniversary.

The group, including team members, industry partners, and an international participant, rode through the city in branded NKAR T-shirts, passing several well-known landmarks as part of the initiative.

Titled the "Charity Challenge by Team NKAR," the event was organised as a way to blend celebration with social purpose.

The idea was initiated by NKAR’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Nilmin Nanayakkara, and coordinated by the company’s staff.

The event was designed with a number of objectives in mind: to mark the company’s four-and-a-half-decade journey in the tourism industry, reaffirm its presence in Sri Lanka’s cycling tourism sector, encourage cycling as a sustainable mode of transport, and support community-based causes.

Funds raised through internal contributions were used to purchase wheelchairs for those in need.

NKAR initially planned to donate four, but later matched the contributions, allowing them to donate a total of eight wheelchairs.

The event also served as an opportunity to support small businesses.

The route was divided into two segments, with a stop for refreshments at the halfway point.

Instead of partnering with large commercial sponsors, NKAR engaged with local street vendors to supply food and drinks.

The company aimed to use the event to strengthen team bonds and encourage healthy living among employees.

More than 120 participants attended, including staff, guests, and supporters.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Nanayakkara thanked everyone involved in the event and reflected on NKAR’s efforts to contribute to both the tourism sector and social development through practical initiatives.

The cycling parade is the first in a series of events planned to mark NKAR’s 45th year.

More projects are expected in the coming months, with the company planning to continue its anniversary activities by connecting travel experiences with community engagement.
