Two teams from the premier degree awarding institute SLIIT, clinched the Gold and Bronze awards under the Tertiary Student Category - Technology at the recently concluded National Best Quality ICT Awards (NBQSA).

Both Gold and Bronze winners have been nominated to participate at the Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) 2014. In addition, for the first time a team from SLIIT earned a Merit award under the Tertiary Student 'Business' Category.

The Gold award was won by T.C.P Kularathna, L.C Kurruppuarachchi, W.M.S.S Wijekoon and W.A.M Kulamini for their innovative product titled "YALU"; a Learning Disability Evaluation Kit for children between the ages of 4 and 6. This evaluation kit consists of a game based module to identify four types of learning disabilities; Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia and Dyspraxia.

The system provides an indication to parents or doctors on a child's learning disabilities. “Yalu” has an android game series and Kinect game series to identify learning disabilities. Users have to login to the application, in order for the child to play the games. Following which a final indication will be provided.

'Shopping EYE' was the other innovative product which earned the Bronze award under the Tertiary Technology Student Category. K.M.D.M Karunarathna, H.M.D.A Weerasingha, M.M. Rumy and M.H. Rajapaksha, proposed a mobile application named 'Shopping EYE' for shoppers, a website for shopping mall managers and an inventory control system for shop owners. These three tools will contain details of the shops inside the mall, available items, maps and customer wish lists.

This will help shoppers to easily navigate through a shopping mall, search for items and check the availability of items. It will also have attractive features such as location based wish list item reminders, promotions, loyalty points management and an Augmented Reality of the items. Shop owners also can attract more customers and promote themselves by using this fine application.

Along with the Gold and Bronze awards, a Merit award was won by another dynamic team from SLIIT under the Tertiary Business Category.

Pandula Paranagama, N.B.S Lakshitha, S.D.P.M. Gunawardana and N.G. Jayathissa were the team members which won this award for SLIIT with their specialty product 'MM CASH - Manage My Cash'. This is an electronic payment system named “MM Cash”, which is designed to simplify day to day transactions. The whole transaction process will be managed by a smart phone. This solution hopes to introduce a cashless environment and a reduction in the time spent on a transaction. This team has also introduced a management system for daily transactions and developed a budget application to analyze day to day transactions and predictions for future expenses. The product is mainly targeted for vendors and customers.

Elated on the win at NBQSA 2014, Lalith Gamage, President and CEO of SLIIT notes, “Firstly, I wish to congratulate the students of SLIIT for their hard-work and enduring effort throughout this entire competition. All three projects submitted for NBQSA were done as final year projects by our IT students. Hence this shows that our students are capable of presenting award winning projects by the time they complete their degrees with us at SLIIT. As an institution we aim on grooming students to not only become knowledgeable about the subject but also to focus on the quality and superiority of their work”.
“I also take this opportunity to thank the BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT for organizing this event annually, which gives our students the chance to showcase their talents and contribute to the industry” mentions Professor Gamage.

Since 2005, the teams representing SLIIT have earned awards at NBQSA. Last year too the students from SLIIT clinched the Gold and Silver award under the Tertiary Student Category.
