Prem Watsas Visit Underscores Fairfaxs Long Term Commitment to Sri Lanka

Fairfirst Insurance had the honour of welcoming Mr. Prem Watsa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, to its head office in Colombo on 14 August 2025.

Returning to Sri Lanka after six years, his visit reaffirmed the Fairfax Group’s strong and ongoing commitment to the country.

Even during the most challenging years of Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, Fairfirst stood firmly by its people—ensuring stability for employees and continuity for customers at a time when uncertainty was widespread.

The Chairman’s visit was a meaningful recognition of that resilience and a celebration of the company’s values in action.

Mr. Watsa acknowledged Sri Lanka’s remarkable recovery in the aftermath of the 2022 crisis, noting how the country has steadily regained its footing through bold reforms, improved governance, and renewed investor confidence.

“After five years, the vehicle market has reopened, leading to a rise in new vehicle registrations.

This is already creating a positive impact on the general insurance sector.

It’s a pleasure to see Sri Lanka’s economy regaining its strength.

With stabilised macroeconomic conditions, easing inflation, and structural reforms underway, this vibrant country is once again full of opportunity,” he said.

Fairfirst, a key part of the global Fairfax Group, has made significant strides since Mr. Watsa’s last visit.

The company continues to grow as a market leader, recognised for its innovation, customer-centric approach, and strong ethical foundations.

With multiple industry accolades and long-standing initiatives like the Road Safety Awareness Programme, Fairfirst remains committed to progress with purpose.

During his visit, Mr. Watsa met with team members across the organisation and spoke of the energy and ethos that define Fairfirst.

“It’s truly energising to meet such a passionate and forward-thinking team, living the values that define the Fairfax culture,” he remarked.

He also extended his best wishes to Steve Yendall, Chief Executive Officer, and Ravishankar Wickneswaran, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, expressing full confidence in their leadership:

“I am confident that Steve and Ravi will lead Fairfirst to become not just the best in service, but the most trusted general insurer in the country.”
