The move will mean viewers can access Disney digital content, including Marvel and Star Wars, through a centralised account, whether they made the purchase through Google Play or iTunes.
It will also enable Disney purchases made through Google Play to be played through Apple devices, and vice-versa.
As a result of the decision, Disney has simplified its digital distribution by enabling users to watch their purchases across devices.
The Disney Movies Anywhere App was launched for iTunes in February but was only released on Android today, a move which now means users can watch Disney content across Android and Apple devices, regardless of which firm’s app store it was purchased from.
Jonathan Zepp, head of Google Play Movies partnerships, said: “We want to make it easy for movie fans to enjoy all of their past and future digital purchases across all of their devices.
“Our partnership with Disney now gives Google Play users the ability to conveniently watch all of their Disney, Marvel and Pixar digital movies that have been purchased from any Disney Movies Anywhere participating retailer.”
Disney’s chief technology officer, Jamie Voris, told the Verge that the firm will be looking for more partners in the future to help streamline the digital content viewing market.
Thic comes after Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney and ABC Television Group said the company will be looking to make it easier for people to access its digital content earlier this year.
