MediaTek unveils its first Wi Fi 7chipsets

Businesscafe - Today, MediaTek unveiled its first Wi-Fi 7 chipsets, the Filogic 380 and Filogic 880, optimized for client devices and residential access points, respectively.

Given that MediaTek’s announcement follows hot on the heels of successive Wi-Fi 7 chipset releases from fellow industry titans Qualcomm and Broadcom, the company faced an uphill struggle to stand out from the crowd.

Yet by leveraging its Filogic tonic of unique technical innovations and shrewd market positioning, MediaTek was able to turn heads and carve out its slice of the Wi-Fi 7 market.

One of the Filogic’s major innovations is the Single-MAC design, which eliminates the need for inter-chip synchronization between different radio bands.

This feature could make the aggregation of multiple links across multiple frequency bands extremely efficient, reducing the multilink operation (MLO) latency to 100 microseconds (μs) compared to the 10 milliseconds (MS) possible with multi-MAC solutions.

These latency rates make the Filogic well suited to support nascent ultra-low-latency demanding applications such as AR/VR.

Another eye-catching technical innovation is the upscaled Penta-band (five-band) functionality of the Filogic 880 chipset.

This solution was positioned as the perfect fit for high-capacity home mesh networking, with the 19 Gbps fronthaul and 17 Gbps backhaul promising an aggregated 36 Gbps peak PHY speed, a new record in-home Wi-Fi throughput.

Although MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 7 portfolio may not (yet) be as diverse as Qualcomm’s or Broadcom’s, the exclusive technical innovations found in the chipsets have helped distinguish their offering from the competition.

With the Filogic 380 and 880, MediaTek has cemented its position as a leading Wi-Fi chipset innovator and, at the same time, has raised the bar for the competition.
