The fleeting vid idea was conceived by Periscope co-founder Kayvon Beykpour during street protests in Turkey as a means of informing the world about current events and has been embraced by Twitter as a natural progression of its six second loop Vine platform.
Speaking to tech Crunch Beykpour said: “Our vision is similar to Twitter’s. We’re trying to build a medium that gives you a pulse on what is happening in the world. Ultimately, that’s what Twitter is and what Periscope can be.”
The new system will go head-to-head with rival platform Meerkat which stole a march on Periscope following its launch but Beykpour stresses that his system has advantages in that it allows people to save streams and replay them later and plugs directly into Twitter.
