92-year-old woman sets record by finishing marathon

A 92-year-old cancer survivor has become the oldest woman to finish a marathon.

Harriette Thompson of Charlotte, N.C., completed Sunday’s 26.2-mile Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego in 7 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds.

“I’m fine, they’re really pampering me here,” she said after her 16th Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

Thompson is 92 years, 65 days old, according to race organizers.

The oldest woman to previously complete a marathon was Gladys Burrill, who was 92 years, 19 days old when she finished the 2010 Honolulu Marathon.

Meanwhile, in the USA Track & Field Half Marathon in San Diego, Meb Keflezighi was second in 1:02:29, the fastest of all time for a runner 40 or older. Keflezighi, 40, won last year’s Boston Marathon.

Jordan Chipangama of Flagstaff, Ariz., won the half marathon in 1:02:27.
