Facebook taps Google Fiber co-founder Kevin Lo to help boost wireless offering

Facebook has hired former Google Fiber manager Kevin Lo, to help it push ahead with its vision of providing internet access to more people around the world.

Lo will undertake the role of director of infrastructure connectivity and, investments and according to Re/code, will be tasked with handling the social giant's external partnerships around these offerings.

Facebook has been clear that it doesn't want to become an internet service provider like Google Fiber, and Lo will instead manage deals like the platform's trans-Atlantic fiber-optic cable partnership it recently inked with Microsoft.

Lo will not, however, work on the platform's troubled Free Basics service, which is designed to bring internet access to emerging markets but has courted controversy after being snubbed by countries like India.

Lo joined Google in 2010 and was hired as the first manager for its Google Fiber broadband network which he ran for five years.

A Facebook spokesperson said: "We're excited to have Kevin join Facebook. Kevin will help shape our strategy and broader framework for Facebook's infrastructure connectivity investments with partners. He will work alongside

Facebook's infrastructure and connectivity teams to help build an active partner ecosystem and accelerate the adoption of new technologies that can drastically change the economics of deploying internet infrastructure."
