A seminar on “Improving Tool Room Productivity through Automation” will be held on Thursday 12 March 2015 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa.

The seminar will focus on introducing innovative solutions on design-to-manufacturing for the local Mould, Die and Tooling Industry.

The seminar will be conducted by the Die and Mould Facilitation and Development Centre, attached to the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Moratuwa, together with Siemens PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) Software and their local partner Kingslake.

Siemens PLM Software is a world-leading provider of product lifecycle management and manufacturing operations management software.

They help thousands of companies realise innovation by optimising their processes, from planning and development through to manufacturing, production and support. Siemens PLM offers Siemens NX (formerly Unigraphics, UG NX) which delivers the industry's broadest suite of integrated, fully associative CAD/CAM/CAE applications.

NX touches the full range of development processes in product design, manufacturing and simulation, allowing companies to encourage the use of best practices by capturing and reusing product and process knowledge.

The event is also co-partnered by the Mould and Die Makers Association of Sri Lanka.

Mr L L Buddhadasa, the President of the Mould and Die Makers Association said that they are very happy to engage with the Die and Mould Facilitation and Development Centre and Siemens PLM Software, in order to grasp the new technological trends that could help their members improve their designing and manufacturing efficiency.

He also added that this engagement will help achieve the much needed support and services of the modern technology with professional know-how and techniques that Siemens PLM carries.

And it will also help to benchmark the good practices in the same industry across the world, while getting assistance from Siemens PLM Software.

The Director of the Die and Mould Facilitation and Development Centre and a Senior Lecturer, Mr Janaka Mangala said:

"This centre is currently considered as a Centre of Excellence as it provides technical expertise and support to the industry, especially in the field of mould and die manufacture, while also focusing on training and developing the human resources to meet the industry expectations.

Mr Mangala said that the unit as well as the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa would like to bridge the new technology to the students as well as to the industry.

He also stated that the special session that Siemens PLM and Kingslake are arranging for the students under the Die and Mould Facilitation and Development Centre will showcase the beauty of PLM beyond CAD, CAM and CAE".

Kingslake’s CEO, Mr Duleep Fernando, said: “Kingslake has been working with mould makers since 2007, and has assisted several of them in introducing new technologies to their mould making process.

We would like to engage with the Die and Mould Facilitation Centre and the Mould and Die Makers Association to develop their skills and values, while introducing modern technologies through the world-leading PLM software solution provider, Siemens.”

The day’s programme will consist of two parts. The morning session will be focused on giving students an insight of what Siemens has to offer in the areas of Aerospace, Robotics, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Design, Simulation & Mould Tooling and more, while the afternoon session will cater to high-end industrial requirements and finding credible answers for the identified problems in the Die and Mould industry in Sri Lanka. Industry professionals who are on the lookout for new technologies can register by calling Kingslake on 011 77 99 200 prior to the event.
