SLIIT Alumni Carve Out Bright Future

In a highly competitive corporate environment, industries require graduates who are competent and versatile in their chosen field.

SLIIT the premier degree awarding institute has paved the way for students to become successful in the real world.

Along with an esteemed panel of lecturers, many foreign university partnerships and state of the art facilities, SLIIT also provides students with scholarships, internships and employment at top companies in Sri Lanka.

SLIIT has thus far produced over 9,000 graduates in the fields of IT, Business and Engineering with Bachelors and Masters Degrees and a further 21,000 IT professionals, amounting to nearly half of all IT professionals in the country.

One such student is Dilshan Silva; the first student from SLIIT to earn a PhD from Imperial College London.

Completing his BSc in IT at SLIIT, Dilshan was also awarded the Professor Lalith Gamage Gold Medal and the Best Performance cash prize by the Curtin University of Australia for being an all-rounder in the year 2005.

Upon graduating, Dilshan went on to complete his MSc in Advanced Software Engineering at Kings College in London.

In 2009, Dilshan received the BAE systems (British Aerospace) Chairman’s Bronze Award for top ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution in the domain of Distribution, Manufacturing and Engineering.

In 2010, he received a full scholarship to obtain his PhD in Computer Science at Imperial College – London.

Dilshan attributes his success to SLIIT, for giving him a solid foundation in terms of training and skills needed to achieve his academic goals.

"Due to its excellent teaching and campus facilities, SLIIT is an institute with very high standards. Being selected to a leading International Software Company for employment further proves the high quality and recognition given to SLIIT.

I will always be indebted to the highly dedicated panel of lecturers for their guidance towards my success" noted Dilshan.

Chamira Jayasinghe, a Gold medalist at the Young Computer Scientist awards in 2007 commented, "I graduated in 2011, from SLIIT with a Bsc (Hons) in IT.

During my 4th year I entered the SLIIT Concept Nursery Programme. The SLIIT Concept Nursery, taught us how to start a business, the way forward and other vital tools on entrepreneurship.

The specialized mentoring I got from Dr. Malitha Wijesundara, Dean School of Computing enabled me to start my own business.

My company, 'Arimac Lanka' is an interactive studio, which focuses on the research and development for technology, 3 – D animation and software development.

The Concept Nusery at SLIIT is an ideal choice for budding entrepreneurs. I thank SLIIT for giving me a chance to achieve my dreams". Over the years having represented Sri Lanka in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand for many innovative projects, at the National Best Quality Software Awards in 2012, Chamira got a special recognition award for 'ICT Entrepreneur of the Year 2012'.

Renard Julian Pereira, a former student at Lyceum International School, earned a BSc (Hons) degree in Information Technology (specializing in Software Engineering).

"Education at SLIIT is to face an all new challenge each day. Every little task allocated for the students, gears us to confront what is thrown at us in the real world. Consistent self-improvement within a conducive simulated environment builds our self-confidence under the capacity to overcome adversities, both officially and personally, and this is what SLIIT has to offer the youth."

I selected SLIIT due its academic excellence and reputation. Currently I am working at Virtusa, an opportunity I received through SLIIT. I went through an interview process and was lucky enough to get a post there. I am also lecturing at the British Computer Society (BCS)” Julian said.

At the SLIIT convocation this year, Julian received the Professor Sam Karunatne Gold Medal for Academic Excellence as well as the Gold Medal for the Best Overall Performance, which was sponsored by IFS. He was also the winner of the Dialog Axiata award for Best Overall Performance for the BSc degree in IT, specialising in Software Engineering.

Another promising student is Tharindu Edirisinghe, who received the Professor Lalith Gamage Gold Medal for the Outstanding SLIIT Graduate who excelled in both Academic and Extra and Co-curricular activities, at the SLIIT convocation this year.

Tharindu has been pursuing a degree at SLIIT on the weekends on a part-time basis. However due to his performance, Tharindu received a scholarship within his first semester, allowing him to continue following a BSc (Hons)degree in IT, specialising in Software Engineering. Soon he received a full scholarship including an internship at Virtusa. Currently, Tharindu is a Software Engineer at WSO2 and hopes to start his MSc in Cyber Security.

“The SLIIT staff members are very helpful and are always there to provide support. Unlike other campuses, SLIIT offers the opportunity to engage in part-time work, which is a win-win situation. Virtusa is a top company and SLIIT has really helped me move forward in my career,” Tharindu said.

Ranked by LMD as the number one institute in Higher Education in 2013, SLIIT has received many reviews, with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars based on Google analytics.

These reviews are written on a voluntary basis and provided by students, parents and other interest groups. "This is where my daughter had her studies for the first degree in IT. It is an excellent university" noted Lionel Amarakone.

Kasun Madushanka, a student at SLIIT commented, "I had an experience of a lifetime. Love this place a lot". Many well-known international universities do not have such high reviews, hence 4.8 stars, cements SLIIT's status as not just the premier degree awarding institute but also as a great place to learn and build a career.
