The Australian was in intensive care for two days after the incident which occurred while he was batting for South Australia against New South Wales in Sydney.
To pay tribute to the player, over 100,000 Twitter users around the world took part in the #putoutyourbats social media campaign. As its name suggests, the cricket community come together in a touching act of respect by putting their bats outside.
The gesture became so popular that #putoutyourbats trended in the UK on Saturday morning.
Australia captain Michael Clarke said: “We're going to miss that cheeky grin and that twinkle in his eye. The world lost one of its great blokes this week and we are all poorer for it.
“Our promise to Hughesy's family is that we will do everything we can to honour his memory.”
Furthermore, the Australian side said it will retire the number 64 shirt in order to honour Hughes.
