Ducati Announces Testastretta DVT Engine (Video)

Ducati has unveiled a new 1198cc Testastretta engine ahead of the EICMA Motorcycle Show in Milan, Italy.

The Ducati Testastretta DVT is the first motorcycle engine with variable valve timing of both the intake and exhaust camshafts. Desmodromic Variable Timing (DVT) is claimed by Ducati to guarantee the “highest power, smooth delivery, muscular torque at low rpm and reduced fuel consumption.”

While variable valve timing is not new to motorcycle engines such as Kawasaki’s VVT on the Concours 14, the DVT system is the first that can constantly adjust the exhaust cam as well as the intake. This allows for less overlap at low-rpm for smoother engine operation and more torque while maximizing overlap for high rpm performance.

The DVT system varies the oil pressure in chambers inside of an external housing affixed to cam belt pulleys to adjust the camshaft timing via an internal mechanism attached to the camshafts. Depending on the oil pressure adjusted by dedicated valves controlled by sensors on the cam covers, the timing can be advanced or retarded.

The Testastretta DVT produces a claimed 160 horsepower at 9500 rpm and 100 lb-ft of maximum torque at 7500 rpm. At 3500 rpm the torque is 59 lb-ft and remains consistently above 74 lb-ft between 5750 and 9500 rpm. Despite this increased power and torque this new DVT engine sees an average of eight percent reduction in fuel consumption.

The Testastretta DVT also features Ducati’s Dual Spark (DS) system that ensures complete combustion using a twin flame-front emanating from two sparkplugs. Each plug is managed independently to optimize efficiency in all conditions. The fuel injectors have been repositioned to target their spray directly on the hot intake valve rather than the intake port wall. This causes greater vaporization for a more efficient fuel burn. A secondary air system completes the oxidization of unburned hydrocarbons to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide levels.

Valve clearance intervals have increased to 19,000 miles, up 4000 from the previous models.

While Ducati has not confirmed what model will be featuring the Testastretta DVT, Ducati literature claims, “This engine can be used in a wide variety of conditions and locations, while always delivering top performance and exceptional user-friendliness, safety and sheer excitement.” Sounds like a new Multistrada powerplant to us.
